A University isn't a soda or a sneaker that needs a trademark/brand, the logos for which are simple and catch the eye in order to say "here I am, buy me". The old University of California logo isn't saying "buy me", it's saying "this is who we are" - a statement, not a guarantee of availability. Big difference.
